Teaching Austin About Salty And Sweet

At the tail end of our third Food Vs. Food, Austin was complaining that the Wendy's Frosty was too, um, frosty. I suggested he dip one of the In-N-Out fries (they were not all gobbled up as they were markedly less tasty than Wendy's fries, apparently) into the Frosty to warm it up, plus the salty of the fry and the sweet of the Frosty would be, um, sweet.

I thought he would give me that very special and unique 13 year-old stare, but instead he immediately complied...

...and was instantly...

...smitten. Next up: bacon and chocolate.

Food Vs. Food: Wendy's Vs. In-N-Out

Here we are again. Don't ask me how we finally settled on Wendy's Vs. In-N-Out. It was a bloody battle between Jack In The Box, Carl's Jr, Sonic...there is no right way to compare crappy fast food!

The boys started with a double cheeseburger with the works from Wendy's and a "double double" from In-N-Out. Austin thought In-N-Out was a clear winner; husband thought the meat of the In-N-Out burger was mildly superior but everything else about the burger was on par with Wendy's. This insulted Austin greatly.

Winner: In-N-Out

Wendy's single cheeseburger and a cheeseburger from In-N-Out. Austin hated the Wendy's single while husband actually found it preferable to Wendy's double burger. Austin thought the In-N-Out single had way too much tomato and husband thought it was "meh".

Winner: Husband- Wendy's Austin- In-N-Out

Wendy's fries stomped In-N-Out. I did not sample any of the goods, however I could tell from appearance alone that In-N-Out's fries were going to lose. They looked like the freezer burned fries from high school that were cooked in not hot enough oil that you had to drown in salt, ketchup and ranch dressing to consume. Memories.

Winner: Wendy's

Wendy's famous Frosty and In-N-Out chocolate shake. Not exactly the same thing, we realize. They found the In-N-Out shake to be more chocolaty, but the ice cream consistency of the Frosty got high-ish marks.

Winner: Frosty (duh)

Here is my chicken Caesar salad. I have now had the pleasure of consuming chicken salads from McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's. This one was alright, the lettuce tasted fresh, the chicken tasted the most like chicken (instead of compressed chicken parts formed into a patty and then chopped), but the dressing was flavorless.

So far, I'm going to have to give it to McDonald's, though that's not saying much.

Workout: 2 mile hike with husband and Austin in the hot ass burning California stupid sun. Yes, I got burnt. Yes, we were out for 33 minutes. I wanna move to Portland!

Food vs. Food Challenge #1: Dominoes vs. Pizza Hut

My brilliant husband and my brillianter stepson came up with Food vs. Food.  We have vowed to, at least monthly, taste test two big brand name, crappy food chains and share our results with the world.  We plan to shoot video in the future, so stay tuned!
Our first challenge food was pepperoni pizza:  Dominoes vs. Pizza Hut.  I idiotically forgot my camera but did have the laptop with a web cam, hence the odd pictures of boxes and us eating, but no money shots of the actual food.  It looked like pepperoni pizza.
Side by side (we ordered Pizza Hut on location, called Dominoes while waiting for Pizza Hut, placed our order with Dominoes and sped with the Pizza Hut pie to Dominoes where we demolished both in about 10 minutes.  Consciously, of course).

The Results:
Mandy:
Pizza Hut wailed on Dominoes, although I grew up with Dominoes and that brought back memories of disappointment.  I remember craving pizza, ordering from Dominoes, and then being like, oh, is that all?  Everything was soft; the dough, the sauce and the cheese so it felt like one big goo ball in my mouth.  And the crust tastes like NOTHING, as does the cheese.
Pizza Hut was nothing to get excited by either, but the crust had a bit of sweetness and crunch to it.  The sauce was also marginally better and the cheese tasted like nothing.  Pepperoni on both were fine; thin and kind of crunchy.

Winner:  Pizza Hut

Evan:
"Upon first glance, Dominoes looked tastier and more appealing.  The first bite, however, goes to Pizza Hut.  The first bite of Dominoes was a little bitter.  I finished the Pizza Hut slice first but it didn't taste as good as I remember.  Next I sampled the Dominoes slice and was a little impressed.  There was something about the softness of Dominoes dough that was very appealing.  In the final analysis, it came down to taste.  Pizza Hut's dough was more flavorful and crispier, while Dominoes' was basically flavorless.  Honestly, they both tasted pretty similar and neither was remarkable."

Winner:  Pizza Hut

Austin (sent via text):
“The initial (bite) goes to Pizza Hut. The first pepperoni was crispy and slightly burnt. They were a lot bigger than the Dominoes. But the full slice goes to Dominoes. As the Pizza Hut went on, the cheese wasn’t flavorful enough and the crispy turned into burns. The Dominoes sauce was tastyer, but the crust was bland but fluffy. I did choose Dominoes because I do like the texture of food more than the taste. Even though Pizza Hut tasted better, Dominoes was really melty, soft and greasy.”

Winner:  Dominoes
